FACT: Ballet is hard.
Here at B Public Relations, we are positively addicted to looking for new ways to have fun getting fit.
Envious of the finesse figures gliding down the Victoria’s Secret runway last month, we were desperate to try out the latest workout trend; Barrecore.
A fusion of ballet and core conditioning, this ballet workout has been praised by the likes of Alexa Chung and Candice Swanepoel, and claims to burn over 450 calories per session whilst improving strength and balance – we couldn’t think of a better way to shift the post-Christmas turkey tum!
After initially expecting a graceful hour of pointy-toed twirls and gentle pliés, we were quickly reminded there is a reason why so many of us wobble into a studio as children only to stumble at the first hurdle. Our teacher, resembling a fierce and fabulous ballerina, both lean and muscular with an outgoing sense of enthusiasm, ushers us into the mirrored room to begin our ballet workout session.
The class starts with a free weight warm up, testing our core stability and upper body strength from the start, leaving us shaking and weakened within the first 10 minutes – but then comes sequence after sequence of seriously challenging exercises.
Small yet very intense movements will have you engaging muscles that you never knew existed, whilst the soundtrack (far from Prokofiev’s compositions) will encourage you to dig deep and finish your set with a smug sense of achievement…. Or shed a tear in our case.
Barrecore guides you through a series of leg, glute and seated exercises, flowing through to core work and finishing with a quick relaxation and cool down period. Each 60-minute ballet workout targets the major muscle groups and improves posture and alignment no matter what your fitness level, enabling you to effectively, efficiently and safely reshape the entire body, creating the highly coveted ‘barre body’.
We certainly felt the burn on this one!
